Amidst the uncertainty brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, a college student embarked on a remote internship with Sysdig, focusing on cloud security and machine learning. Despite lacking experience with Kubernetes, Docker, or containers, the student quickly adapted to the role, thanks to efficient onboarding and strong support from HR and IT teams. The internship involved developing Systerns, a program designed to enhance the Falco open-source threat detection engine by using machine learning to identify suspicious activities within containers. This project aimed to predict true command names and detect crypto miner attacks, requiring extensive experimentation with machine learning models and data pipelines. Throughout the process, constant communication with mentors and collaboration with a co-intern played crucial roles, with tools like Slack, Google Colab, and GitHub facilitating teamwork. The experience provided valuable insights into project planning, technical execution, and the importance of focusing on achievable goals. The internship concluded with a deep appreciation for the dedicated team at Sysdig and the lessons learned in both technical and collaborative aspects.
