What is Event Driven Architecture?

Event-driven architecture (EDA) is a design approach in which system occurrences or state changes are published as events and processed asynchronously by interested components, enabling loosely coupled, scalable, and responsive distributed applications. Often combined with microservices and event-driven programming, EDA supports real-time processing, integrations, workflows, event sourcing, CQRS, and publish-subscribe messaging across varied technologies and endpoints. Common applications include e-commerce orders, IoT monitoring, authentication, notifications, trading, analytics, smart-home automation, online gaming, and communication among microservices. Its advantages include independent component deployment, fault tolerance, durable event histories, interoperability, and the ability to react quickly to changing conditions, while its challenges include greater operational complexity, event ordering, eventual consistency, debugging, and event-schema management. Apache Kafka is presented as a common event-streaming foundation for EDA, while Confluent offers managed Kafka services and related capabilities such as Apache Flink stream processing, Kafka Streams, schema management, monitoring, security, connectors, and integrations intended to simplify operating event-driven systems at scale.
