Schema Registry for Confluent Platform
Blog post from Confluent
Confluent Schema Registry is a centralized service for defining, storing, validating, versioning, and evolving schemas for Kafka message data, helping producers and consumers maintain compatible data contracts as applications change. Available as a fully managed capability in Confluent Cloud and a self-managed option in Confluent Platform, it supports Avro, JSON Schema, and Protobuf, with REST APIs and Kafka client serializers and deserializers that manage schema retrieval and efficient wire encoding through schema IDs. Its compatibility checks, schema ID validation, contexts, and versioning reduce risks of inconsistent, corrupt, or incompatible data while supporting governance, lineage, auditing, compliance, collaboration, and simpler application development. Schema Registry integrates with Kafka, Connect, ksqlDB, REST Proxy, the Confluent CLI, and management interfaces, and Confluent recommends adopting it at the beginning of projects rather than retrofitting custom schema-management code later. Cloud access requires Essentials or Advanced Stream Governance packages, while some self-managed Platform capabilities, including security features, broker-side validation, and Schema Linking, require an Enterprise license.
