Announcing the Source Available Confluent CLI

Confluent has made version 3 of its command-line interface source available on GitHub under the Confluent Community License, allowing users to inspect, modify, and redistribute the code while prohibiting its use in competing SaaS products. The release aims to establish the CLI as a unified tool for Kafka, ksqlDB, and Confluent management, while lowering barriers for developers to report issues, request features, and submit pull requests through GitHub. Version 3 introduces Kafka REST support for all Kafka commands, safeguards against accidental cloud-resource deletion, more consistent command syntax, improved discoverability, and a plugin system for custom commands. Built in Go with the Cobra framework, the CLI supports Confluent Cloud and Platform workflows across macOS, Linux, and Windows on ARM and AMD architectures, with automated cross-compilation and release processes. Confluent said that making the project source available required migration to public APIs, security hardening, and removal or publication of private dependencies, and it invites community members to build the software locally, contribute code, and provide feedback.
