How PostgreSQL CDC Tools Work on YugabyteDB
Blog post from Yugabyte
YugabyteDB’s PostgreSQL compatibility and use of PostgreSQL logical replication allow popular CDC tools such as Sequin, PeerDB, and Supabase ETL to stream database changes with minimal modification. The main architectural distinction is YugabyteDB’s Virtual WAL, which merges logs from distributed table partitions into a commit-ordered replication stream but does not provide globally comparable stream positions across separate replication streams. Sequin supported live streaming and backfills after small adjustments for Virtual WAL behavior and unsupported legacy PostgreSQL features, while PeerDB required changes to its initial snapshot and parallel backfill approach because PostgreSQL-specific internal shortcuts do not apply to YugabyteDB’s distributed storage. Supabase ETL needed revised coordination between backfill and streaming workers, replacing cross-stream position comparisons with a database-wide marker to prevent tables from stalling during handoff. The tests suggest that PostgreSQL CDC tooling can be adapted to YugabyteDB without redesigning core replication logic, although the provided forks are proof-of-concept validations rather than production-ready integrations and should be tested against individual workloads, schemas, and failure scenarios.
