What is workforce identity? A guide to employee access
Blog post from WorkOS
Workforce identity manages how employees, contractors, and partners are recorded, authenticated, provisioned, authorized, and audited across an organization’s applications, typically connecting an HR system or directory source of truth with identity providers, apps, and access records. Its main components include directories, SSO and identity providers, authentication methods such as MFA and passkeys, lifecycle provisioning through standards like SCIM, in-app authorization, and session and audit controls. Employee access must be managed throughout joining, role changes, and departure, since manually granted permissions, active sessions, refresh tokens, and API keys can persist after directory deactivation. Authentication verifies identity but does not necessarily create an application account or determine permissions, while provisioning and session enforcement are separate responsibilities. Workforce identity differs from customer identity management because it governs an organization’s workers rather than product users, though B2B applications often integrate with customers’ workforce identity systems through SAML, OIDC, and directory synchronization. Organizations should assess their source of truth, automated versus manual access, role-change handling, post-offboarding credential duration, and historical auditability before selecting identity tools.
