Set up the WorkOS MCP server in every coding agent with one command
Blog post from WorkOS
WorkOS provides a remote MCP server at https://mcp.workos.com/mcp and a CLI that simplifies configuring it for supported AI coding agents, currently Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor. After installing the standalone CLI through Homebrew, npm, or direct downloads, users can run `workos mcp install` to detect agents and add the server definition using each client’s appropriate configuration method, while optional `--agent` flags limit installation to selected clients. Configuration is separate from authentication: the CLI does not require credentials or inspect agent credential stores, and users must complete OAuth sign-in within each agent through WorkOS Connect. Status and diagnostic commands report whether clients are available and configured, although authentication remains unverified, while JSON status output and `workos doctor` can identify endpoint mismatches. Installation is opt-in, can be removed safely with `workos mcp remove`, and includes safeguards for malformed Cursor configuration files, outdated client versions, existing conflicting Codex endpoints, and incomplete OAuth flows. The server supports additional clients through manual setup, operates under the user’s existing WorkOS permissions and selected environment, and can be restricted by administrators through enablement, production-access, and write-access controls.
