Inside the ID-JAG: How enterprise-managed authorization actually works
Blog post from WorkOS
Enterprise-Managed Authorization (EMA) for the Model Context Protocol became Stable in June 2026, allowing company administrators to authorize MCP client-to-server access centrally through a shared identity provider rather than requiring each employee to complete interactive consent flows. The system uses the emerging ID-JAG standard, a short-lived signed JWT issued through OAuth token exchange that asserts a specific user, client, authorization server audience, resource server, and permitted scopes; the receiving authorization server must validate it and exchange it for a normal access token rather than treating it as a bearer token. EMA depends on both the client and resource authorization server independently trusting the same enterprise IdP, with the IdP enforcing organizational policies such as group-based permissions, conditional access, and scope restrictions. Critical implementation concerns include strict validation of typed JWT headers, audience and client bindings, issuer signatures, expiry, subject resolution, and multi-tenant identity claims, while avoiding token-substitution and account-linking vulnerabilities. Although ID-JAGs may be reused to obtain fresh access tokens within their intended authorization-server audience, implementations should not issue refresh tokens for them or permit use across different downstream authorization servers. Deployments also require operational work around client-ID mapping, confidential-client support, fallback interactive authorization, IdP trust configuration, and privacy-preserving discovery metadata. EMA centralizes the initial access decision but does not provide visibility into subsequent MCP tool calls or data transfers, leaving server operators responsible for audit logging, account linking, and federation management.
