init() fireside recap: Nikita Shamgunov on getting your database picked by an agent
Blog post from WorkOS
At init() 2026, Neon founder Nikita Shamgunov described how the company’s deliberate focus on a serverless, Postgres-only database with branching helped it become an easy-to-integrate “widget” for developer platforms, culminating in Replit Agent creating 13,000 Neon databases in one day and later tens of thousands daily. He argued that AI agents are changing software distribution by making system prompts, partner integrations, documentation, and “harness relations” decisive factors in which products agents recommend and provision, leading Neon to measure agent recommendations through evaluations and rapidly support emerging agent tools. While narrowness drove early adoption through partnerships with platforms such as Vercel and Replit, Shamgunov warned that standalone widgets risk becoming features of larger platforms, increasing pressure to expand into broader product offerings. He said Neon’s sale to Databricks provided the enterprise platform, distribution, and infrastructure capabilities it would otherwise have needed years to build, while Neon continues to pursue enterprise growth through features such as compliance, security, and high performance. His broader view is that durable companies will either control the user interface or provide essential infrastructure, and that firms must honestly assess whether they have a defensible right to win as AI makes building software cheaper and competition more intense.
