Summary

WorkOS SAML certificate renewal events can be used to prevent predictable sign-in outages by turning repeated expiry notifications into a single, actionable reminder for each certificate. The workflow should route reminders based on certificate type: customer-managed ResponseSigning certificates require action from the customer’s IT team, while RequestSigning certificates require confirmation that the customer’s identity provider will retrieve or accept WorkOS’s rotated service-provider certificate; unrecognized types should be triaged internally. Because renewal-required events may recur, be duplicated, and arrive out of order, reminders should be idempotently keyed by connection ID, certificate type, and expiry date, with expired certificates escalated rather than repeatedly re-notified. Renewal events should prompt verification of the connection’s current certificates rather than automatically close tickets, since new certificates may coexist with old ones and request-signing rotations may not generate a renewal event. The process can be supported through WorkOS dashboard visibility, IT contacts, and short-lived Admin Portal renewal links, while webhook handlers should verify signatures, acknowledge quickly, queue background processing, and subscribe only to relevant event types.
