How to add enterprise SSO and SCIM to a Better Auth app
Blog post from WorkOS
Enterprise SSO can be added to a Better Auth application by integrating WorkOS for SAML or OIDC identity-provider exchanges, Directory Sync provisioning events, and self-service enterprise setup, while Better Auth continues to manage users, sessions, passwords, and social login. The approach creates a WorkOS organization and verified-domain mapping for each customer, uses email-based home realm discovery to route enterprise users to SSO, supports IdP-initiated sign-ins, and validates callback state, expected organization or connection, and verified email domains before creating a session. SSO identities are linked using the stable combination of WorkOS organization ID and IdP user ID rather than email, preventing unsafe automatic account linking and allowing existing users to connect their SSO identity from authenticated settings pages. Per-customer enforcement can block password and other direct authentication methods after migration to SSO, while verified WorkOS webhooks update domain records and revoke Better Auth sessions when directory users are deactivated or deleted. The guidance also recommends idempotent, fast webhook processing, periodic reconciliation, self-service Admin Portal links for IT administrators, and end-to-end testing with WorkOS’s Test Identity Provider, while noting that organizations with increasingly enterprise-focused needs may eventually prefer consolidating all authentication functions in WorkOS AuthKit.
