How to add AuthKit to a Next.js app
Blog post from WorkOS
AuthKit provides a production-ready authentication system for Next.js App Router applications, covering sign-up, sign-in, password recovery, email verification, multifactor authentication, social login, and session management through WorkOS. The integration can be completed quickly with the WorkOS CLI installer, which detects the framework, configures dashboard settings and environment variables, adds required routes and providers, and validates the build, or manually by installing the SDK and configuring redirect, sign-out, and initiate-login URLs. Manual setup involves encrypting session cookies with a sufficiently long password, wrapping the application in `AuthKitProvider`, adding either a dedicated or composable proxy to manage sessions and route access, and creating callback and login endpoints. Developers can retrieve authenticated users in server or client components, protect pages using `ensureSignedIn`, and sign users out through a server action. The tutorial also recommends testing the complete sign-up and sign-in flow locally and identifies common configuration problems involving sign-out URLs, cookie handling, and exact callback URI matches, with `workos doctor` available for further diagnostics.
