AI agent approval workflows: handling edits and retries
Blog post from WorkOS
WorkOS Airlock’s early-access approval workflow is designed to bind a human approver’s decision to one specific governed AI-agent tool call, such as a $1,200 customer refund, so that changes to the amount, charge, user, organization, or intent require a new review. Applications should create and persist an immutable refund request containing the transaction details, supporting billing evidence, authenticated user and tenant context, and a stable provider idempotency key, then present that exact request to an authorized reviewer. When approval is required, Airlock pauses the provider call and grants a one-time, request-matched pass; the application must resume the saved call after approval rather than treating the approval click as execution. It should preserve pending approvals across restarts, reject denied or expired decisions, prevent concurrent retries from consuming the same pass twice, and avoid assuming later policy edits revoke an existing approval. If a provider response is lost after an approved request may have succeeded, the application should mark the outcome unknown and query provider records instead of issuing another refund, while keeping authorization status distinct from proof of provider success. Testing should verify that altered requests cannot use prior approvals, invalid approvals cannot authorize calls, retries are safely constrained, and timeout recovery does not create duplicate refunds.
