Adopting the software factory model: crawl, walk, run

A cloud software factory is presented as a closed-loop, cloud-based approach to agentic software development that can be adopted progressively through crawl, walk, and run stages. The crawl stage uses low-risk, discrete automations such as issue triage, code review, CI repair, documentation updates, verification, and simple bug fixes, but these point solutions can create fragmented context, governance, observability, and maintenance challenges. During the walk stage, organizations establish a more unified system with cloud-based development environments, centralized agent governance, shared context, auditing, model flexibility, human oversight, and measurable performance metrics, initially deploying an end-to-end multi-agent workflow on a simple product surface. The run stage expands this model to complex, mission-critical projects, requiring stronger remote environments, evaluation systems, security controls, cost management, model routing, stakeholder coordination, and quality assurance. The author argues that mature factories should be measurable, self-improving systems defined partly as code, capable of using multiple models and agent harnesses while retaining ownership of operational data, and cites Warp’s own marketing-site automation as an early example of the approach.
