Compute futures mark the next step in GPU markets
Blog post from Vast.ai
Vast.ai reports that more than 650,000 GPU rentals were completed on its platform in the 30 days ending October 14, 2026, involving over 2,500 independent providers and 34,000 customer accounts, giving it insight into compute pricing and usage. The company supports proposed compute futures from CME Group and Intercontinental Exchange, arguing that derivatives tied to GPU rental prices could help AI companies manage recurring compute costs, enable providers to hedge uncertain rental revenue, and improve lenders’ ability to evaluate hardware investments. In comments submitted to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission on October 20, Vast.ai advocated for well-regulated compute derivatives based on auditable, lawfully sourced settlement benchmarks with clear methodologies, verifiable records, consistent standards, and protections for confidential data.
