Sovereign AI starts with open infrastructure
Blog post from Tailscale
Tailscale announced a multi-million-dollar, multi-year investment in sovereign AI and appointed former Google X leader Patricia Prewitt as General Manager of Sovereign AI to develop practical solutions. The company describes sovereignty as maintaining meaningful control over data, software, infrastructure, and provider choices rather than eliminating all outside dependencies, which it argues is unrealistic in modern computing. It emphasizes interoperability as essential to allowing governments, companies, and individuals to move among compute providers, models, storage, and applications without costly rebuilding. Tailscale plans to focus on securely connecting distributed AI infrastructure and ecosystem components rather than building its own models, GPUs, or datacenters, and says it will work with customers and partners to identify barriers to provider choice before announcing a detailed roadmap later in the year.
