Summary

MagicRoute is a beta routing feature for Premium and Enterprise customers that selects and maintains the best available subnet router, app connector, or Tailscale Service host in environments with multiple overlapping backends. It replaces reliance on DERP-region-based regional routing, which could cause connectors to flap between regions because of minor latency changes or network disruptions, breaking active SSH sessions and file transfers. MagicRoute instead ranks connectors from each client’s perspective using coarse location estimates, assigns clients to the nearest healthy option, distributes clients among tied top choices, and preserves existing connections as long as the selected connector remains healthy. It also supports tailnets using custom DERP servers and automatically fails over through ranked alternatives when a preferred connector becomes unavailable. Administrators can choose MagicRoute or other route-selection modes in the admin console, while future improvements may add direct reachability checks and more scoring signals.
