Escaping the notch: Tailscale's new macOS home
Blog post from Tailscale
Tailscale's macOS application faced challenges with its menu bar icon disappearing into the notch on certain MacBook models, leading to user confusion and bug reports. The issue arose due to Apple's design, which does not provide a way to manage the positioning of menu bar icons, causing the Tailscale icon to be obscured when there are too many icons. To address this, Tailscale implemented a workaround using the occlusionState to detect when the icon is hidden and display a pop-up warning, although this solution was not foolproof. The more significant improvement came with the introduction of a new windowed interface for macOS, available from version 1.96.2, which provides enhanced accessibility to Tailscale's features, such as a searchable list of devices, easy file transfer through Taildrop, and critical error notifications via a red dot on the Dock icon. This new interface aims to improve user experience and is designed to work alongside the existing menu bar app, while similar enhancements are being developed for Windows devices.
