Summary

Tailscale reported that OpenAI’s newly released Codex Cloud launched with built-in Tailscale VPN support despite no formal partnership, custom API, or direct integration work between the companies. Codex Cloud, rolling out to paid ChatGPT users, runs cloud-based coding sessions on GitHub repositories and can use a tagged, reusable, ephemeral Tailscale auth key to let its temporary virtual machines access approved resources within a user’s tailnet. The integration supports HTTP and HTTPS destinations, private IPv4 subnet routes, and certain TCP traffic through an HTTP CONNECT proxy, but excludes MagicDNS, split DNS, UDP, ICMP, inbound connections, SSH, and Tailscale SSH. Tailscale advises users to restrict agent access through tags and grants, maintain key expiration, monitor network flow logs where available, and consider device approval, particularly for networks that retain broadly permissive default access rules.
