Aperture GA: Building a home(lab) for agentic AI

Tailscale has announced the general availability of Aperture, an AI gateway that began as an LLM proxy for protecting API keys on tailnets and has expanded to provide enterprise-oriented controls such as cost management, hooks, guardrails, logging, and MCP and API proxying. The GA release also emphasizes individual and homelab use through included starter tokens, the ability to purchase tokens for open-weight and closed models within Aperture, and support for users’ own API keys and subscriptions. New Tailscale and Tailscale SSH MCP endpoints let approved AI agents add devices to a tailnet and access them securely through SSH, while existing access-control rules, device approval requirements, and action logs provide safeguards and auditing. Aperture’s chat interface now includes Projects for sharing context, tools, and tailnet nodes across related chats, along with configurable default tool permissions that allow users to balance agent flexibility with tighter controls.
