Summary

Stripe’s analysis of transaction data from AI companies on its platform indicates that leading firms are expanding internationally rapidly, with the 100 largest by revenue operating in an average of 120 markets by their third year and earning 48% of revenue outside their home countries. While high-GDP, highly connected countries account for the largest absolute AI spending, India, Mexico, Poland, and the United Arab Emirates stand out for AI spending that is disproportionately high relative to their overall Stripe payment volumes, while Brazil, Japan, and South Korea combine substantial total AI spending with unusually strong AI demand. Across 35 markets with more than $20 million in AI spending by 2024, median year-over-year growth approached 100%, with Mexico growing 264% and South Korea 134%, alongside sustained growth in Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The findings suggest that global availability alone is insufficient for long-term international revenue growth, as faster-growing AI companies use roughly twice as many local payment methods as other firms, and examples from Gamma and Runway indicate that local payments and currency pricing can improve conversion, revenue, and subscription value.
