A Stripe survey of more than 2,300 independent workers across 20 countries found that 57% would accept stablecoin payouts if platforms offered them, largely due to the cost and slow speed of traditional cross-border payment systems. Workers in emerging markets also see stablecoins, which are typically pegged to currencies such as the US dollar, as protection against inflation, a means of accessing dollars, and a tool for financial inclusion where banking access is limited. Regional priorities include inflation protection in Latin America, receiving payments through digital wallets in sub-Saharan Africa, and cheaper, faster remittances in the Middle East, where adoption interest is highest. Although only 18% of workers in emerging markets currently receive stablecoin payouts, platforms including DoorDash, Deel, Ramp, and Meta have begun offering them, while workers are seeking yield on balances, clearer education, and easier wallet setup.

Stripe reports that cross-border payment volume among its fastest-growing businesses has increased by more than 40% annually since 2018, creating currency-management challenges such as double conversion fees, opaque exchange-rate markups, settlement delays, and reliance on multiple providers. To address these issues, Stripe is expanding multicurrency settlement and introducing instant currency conversion within its platform, allowing eligible businesses to settle, hold, and convert funds without moving them to external banks or FX providers. By the end of 2026, businesses in 37 markets are expected to be able to settle in up to 18 currencies, while instant conversion will initially support 15 currencies with real-time rates and no stated hidden markups or weekend surcharges. Stripe says these tools can help global companies, platforms, and marketplaces manage payroll, vendor payments, operating expenses, and cross-border payouts more efficiently, and it plans further features including automated conversions, expanded API access, platform pricing tools, and integrations with Stripe Treasury and Global Payouts.

Stripe’s analysis of transaction data from AI companies on its platform indicates that leading firms are expanding internationally rapidly, with the 100 largest by revenue operating in an average of 120 markets by their third year and earning 48% of revenue outside their home countries. While high-GDP, highly connected countries account for the largest absolute AI spending, India, Mexico, Poland, and the United Arab Emirates stand out for AI spending that is disproportionately high relative to their overall Stripe payment volumes, while Brazil, Japan, and South Korea combine substantial total AI spending with unusually strong AI demand. Across 35 markets with more than $20 million in AI spending by 2024, median year-over-year growth approached 100%, with Mexico growing 264% and South Korea 134%, alongside sustained growth in Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The findings suggest that global availability alone is insufficient for long-term international revenue growth, as faster-growing AI companies use roughly twice as many local payment methods as other firms, and examples from Gamma and Runway indicate that local payments and currency pricing can improve conversion, revenue, and subscription value.
