What Are World Models in Robotics?
Blog post from Roboflow
Robotics world models predict how environments may change in response to robot actions, complementing perception models that identify objects and vision-language-action models that choose actions from instructions. Training these models requires preserving complete, ordered video recordings synchronized with robot actions, states, timestamps, task instructions, and success or failure outcomes, rather than retaining only isolated labeled frames. Separate interaction attempts and, where needed, multiple calibrated camera views help models learn meaningful action-result relationships and avoid misleading examples. Selected frames from the same recordings can still be labeled for detection or segmentation models, while the full recordings and logs remain available for world-model development. Simulation and synthetic data can expand coverage of rare conditions or visual gaps, but results should be validated with real-world footage because simulated physics and generated imagery may differ from operational environments. Roboflow supports the perception portion of this workflow by enabling frame extraction, automated and reviewed labeling, model training, deployment, monitoring, and active-learning-based dataset improvements, while teams retain original robot data for future sequence-based modeling.
