Summary

Short-drama apps have revived the idea behind Quibi by adapting serialized entertainment to mobile viewing habits through vertical, minute-long episodes, cliffhangers, rapid production, performance marketing, and immediate monetization. Originating in China’s ecosystem of web fiction, short-video platforms, mobile payments, and inexpensive production, microdramas reached 576 million Chinese viewers and an estimated RMB 50 billion domestic market in 2024, while global revenue was projected at about $11 billion in 2025. Analysis of app-store data found that roughly 360 short-drama apps generated an estimated 145 million downloads and $230 million in store revenue over 30 days, with Android driving most downloads and iOS producing more direct revenue. Compared with other entertainment apps, short-drama apps convert users to paying customers faster and earn more in early usage by combining free episodes, coins, subscriptions, ads, and personalized paywalls, but they show weaker renewal and long-term retention. Traditional media companies including Disney, Fox, Peacock, TelevisaUnivision, and TikTok are consequently exploring the format, whose main lesson may be its tightly connected approach to marketing, viewing data, payment timing, and rapid content iteration.
