It’s not you, it’s me: when to break up with a paid UA channel
Blog post from RevenueCat
Paid user-acquisition teams should avoid both abandoning ad channels before they have sufficient data and continuing to fund channels that no longer produce profitable, incremental growth. Before judging a channel, marketers should assess whether the product’s conversion rates meet category benchmarks, optimization events have enough volume, creative testing is broad and refreshed, budgets are adequate for the platform, attribution is accurate, delivery reaches valuable audiences, and alternative campaign setups such as web-to-app have been tested. If these factors are sound, a channel may be unsuitable because of a structural cost disadvantage, platform malfunction, lack of incrementality, unit economics that fail despite better conversion quality, or the creative and operational burden it imposes on stronger channels. The proposed “fix, pause, kill” framework recommends fixing internal setup or measurement problems and retesting, pausing activity when external or temporary platform issues arise, and ending investment when clean tests show unsustainable CAC, no incremental business impact, or an unavoidable cost gap, while recognizing that channels can become viable again as platforms, formats, and market conditions change.
