AltStore and the future of 3rd-party app stores: Q&A with founder Riley Testut
Blog post from RevenueCat
AltStore, founded by Riley Testut, is the first official third-party iOS App Store in the EU, launched in response to changes in Apple's App Store policies due to the Digital Markets Act. Initially created to distribute Delta, an emulator not allowed on the App Store, AltStore now offers a native app experience. It utilizes a decentralized system where developers host notarized apps on their servers, and AltStore handles licensing and updates. AltStore targets indie developers and niche apps, providing a platform for those not suited to the traditional App Store's corporate atmosphere. Developers must pass Apple's notarization process to distribute through AltStore, which includes a focus on privacy and security, although some delays can occur. AltStore charges a nominal fee for access and encourages developers to use platforms like Patreon for monetization. While appealing to apps not typically found on the regular App Store, switching to a third-party platform might challenge existing apps due to potential user churn.
