How to Plan a Phased Hybrid Cloud Migration Without Taking Production Down
Blog post from Qovery
A phased hybrid cloud migration keeps on-premises and cloud environments serving production simultaneously while workloads move through six stages: discovery and dependency mapping, landing-zone and network setup, a low-risk pilot, production waves, data-heavy and legacy migrations, and decommissioning. It recommends sequencing work by dependency clusters rather than application lists, retiring unused systems early, moving stateless services first, and migrating tightly coupled applications and databases together unless WAN latency and query volume are low enough to safely separate them. Dedicated private connectivity, non-overlapping IP ranges, shared DNS, identity, observability, and standardized deployment processes should be established before production waves, with interconnect lead times often determining the schedule. Database migrations should use bulk copying, change-data capture, short write freezes, validation checks, reverse replication, and staged traffic shifts, while numeric rollback triggers and rehearsed recovery procedures limit disruption. The plan emphasizes that hybrid operation should have a written end date, typically 12–24 months, because duplicated infrastructure, tooling, operations, and licensing can be more costly than cutovers; it also presents Kubernetes-based platform standardization and Qovery’s deployment tools as ways to reduce operational differences between on-premises and cloud environments.
