Summary

SpareBank 1, an alliance of Norwegian banks that compete commercially while sharing technology and branding, consolidated previously separate data platforms into a shared modern platform built on Snowflake, AWS, dbt, and Prefect. The alliance selected Prefect over alternatives including Airflow and Dagster because of its Python-centered development experience, scheduling, dependency management, logging, infrastructure-as-code support, and ability to coordinate workflows while execution remains on AWS infrastructure in an EU region, helping meet regulatory and privacy requirements. Central ingestion teams use Prefect to process roughly 4,000 source tables daily, including overnight customer and transaction data loads, with Slack alerts and Prefect run details helping engineers investigate and retry failures. Member banks receive preconfigured Prefect accounts, work pools, and AWS execution infrastructure to operate their own pipelines, commonly loading data into Snowflake with Python and dlt, triggering dbt Cloud transformations, and sending data to CRM systems. About 100 users across the alliance use Prefect regularly, supporting analytics, reporting, regulatory compliance, anti-money-laundering and fraud detection, risk assessments, lending decisions, and advisor dashboards.
