Building with Stripe Data Pipeline and the Neon backend
Blog post from Neon
Stripe Data Pipeline’s real-time Postgres sync, combined with Neon’s branching backend, enables applications to write payments through Stripe’s API while reading billing data directly from synchronized Stripe tables rather than relying on webhooks. Two example applications, an AI headshot generator and a prepaid moderation API, calculate customer credit balances dynamically through SQL views that subtract application usage from successful, non-disputed Stripe payments, automatically reflecting refunds and chargebacks. The headshot application prevents double spending through transactional job claims, per-user advisory locks, storage-triggered functions, and scheduled cleanup of stalled jobs, while using private object storage and AI generation services. Neon branches create fast, isolated copies of production database records, uploaded files, and synchronized Stripe data, allowing developers to reproduce payment, upload, refund, and timeout issues at historical points without affecting live systems or triggering production actions. The approach is presented as a reusable billing pattern for credit-, usage-, or access-based products, emphasizing synced Stripe objects, SQL-derived balances, lookup-based pricing, and declarative Neon backend infrastructure.
