A roadmap for load testing 50 million concurrent viewers

The Mux Data team faced an unprecedented challenge of supporting an upcoming event with over 50 million concurrent viewers (CCV), eight times the scale of the Super Bowl they had previously supported. To gain confidence in their systems at this scale, they decided to conduct end-to-end load tests. They identified and addressed bottlenecks in their real-time monitoring database, Kafka layer, and edge service collectors. Through 18 load tests with various tools, charts, and configurations, the team successfully scaled to an unprecedented level of 50 million CCV. The experience equipped them with a repository of application configurations for any scale as well as a comprehensive suite of alerts and runbooks.
