OpenAI Agent SDK Features, Tools And Developer Insights
Blog post from Mem0
OpenAI Agents SDK, launched in March 2025 as a production-oriented successor to the experimental Swarm project, provides a lightweight framework for building AI agents using four main primitives: agents, function tools, handoffs, and guardrails. Available for both Python and TypeScript, it emphasizes rapid development, automatic tracing, provider flexibility through support for more than 100 LLMs, and free open-source use aside from model API costs. Its built-in session history supports short-term conversational state, but it intentionally excludes graph-based workflow orchestration, long-term semantic memory, retrieval, and opinionated planning systems. Compared with LangGraph, which offers more granular control over complex, cyclical graph workflows but requires greater familiarity with state management and graph concepts, Agents SDK is positioned as better suited to teams prioritizing simplicity, fast prototyping, and OpenAI ecosystem integration. For applications requiring persistence, personalization, or learning across sessions, external memory layers such as Mem0 can be integrated to add durable memory and potentially reduce latency and costs through chat-history compression.
