Upon joining Mapbox, the author discovered geojson.io, a tool they had long used for web mapping, and decided to rejuvenate it due to its utility in teaching and spatial data management. Originally created by former Mapbox Engineer Tom MacWright, geojson.io had accumulated user issues over the years, indicating its continued relevance. The author embarked on updating the tool by integrating Mapbox GL JS to modernize its mapping capabilities, despite challenges such as outdated dependencies and the need for custom solutions for features like feature drawing and basemap management. Although this upgrade led to the temporary removal of authentication features, the project benefited from increased community engagement and contributions. As part of Mapbox’s Developer Relations program, the author aims to foster a more active community around geojson.io, ensuring its continued development and support while leveraging it to strengthen developer connections within Mapbox. Future plans involve making the development process more inclusive and launching a public forum to enhance community involvement.
