What's new in distributed trace visualization in Grafana

Grafana Labs has introduced several enhancements to its distributed trace visualization features, aiming to simplify the process of tracing for users and integrate it into a mature observability strategy. Key updates include an improved trace view header that highlights primary information more prominently, such as service and operation names, and uses color-coded tags for status codes. Additionally, span filtering has been introduced to allow users to search and highlight spans based on specific criteria, making it easier to identify performance issues or errors. A new "Show matches only" feature further aids in reducing cognitive load by displaying only the spans that match selected filters. Improvements have also been made to the configuration editor for tracing data sources like Tempo, Jaeger, and Zipkin, organizing settings into collapsible sections and providing more context and documentation links. The updates, available in Grafana 10.1, are complemented by enhanced documentation and a feedback mechanism to capture user insights, with the goal of making tracing more accessible and efficient for organizations.
