Grafana Labs has announced the donation of its open-source, eBPF-based instrumentation tool, Beyla, to the OpenTelemetry project under the new name OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation. This initiative is part of Grafana Labs' long-standing commitment to OpenTelemetry, aimed at addressing a gap in existing OpenTelemetry tooling by providing zero-code instrumentation for capturing application-level telemetry across diverse technologies. Beyla's ability to instrument legacy applications that are challenging to modify or migrate from proprietary systems has made it a valuable asset for users seeking unified metrics without modification effort. Since its initial release in 2023, Beyla has evolved with added support for distributed tracing and various protocols, gaining significant traction and community contribution. The donation symbolizes a shift towards making Beyla a community-owned project, aligning with OpenTelemetry's mission to foster innovation around zero-effort instrumentation. Post-donation, Grafana Labs will maintain Beyla as their distribution of the upstream OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation, retaining only Grafana-specific functionalities, and will continue to collaborate with the community through the OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation Special Interest Group.
