In 2020, Grafana Labs initiated community calls for its projects, including Grafana, Loki, Tempo, and Tanka, as part of a broader strategy originally intended to complement in-person meetups. These calls, which began in a low-key and experimental manner, have become integral for fostering community engagement by providing a platform where users can connect personally, ask questions, and contribute to discussions. The process involved overcoming initial perfectionist tendencies and embracing a "rough plan" approach to improve with each session. Over time, the calls have evolved to include dedicated UX sessions and have expanded their reach through YouTube recordings, allowing broader access and engagement beyond live participants. Grafana Labs continues to refine and expand these community interactions, aiming for greater transparency and user involvement in their internal processes, while also encouraging participation through an open public calendar and ongoing recruitment efforts.
