Grafana Labs has developed a Production Readiness Review (PRR) process inspired by Google's Site Reliability Engineering practices to ensure product stability and reduce risks before products go live. Unlike larger companies with dedicated SRE teams, Grafana relies on product teams to fulfill this role, incorporating PRR as a separate process led by experienced engineers outside the product teams. The PRR process involves a detailed checklist that evolves with company needs, aiming to identify and address potential issues, ultimately reducing toil and risk. The review includes several one-on-one sessions between the product team and the reviewer, focusing on thorough evaluations and addressing identified issues. While the initial PRR cycle can take two to three months, the goal is to gather feedback and continuously improve both the checklist and the product. Grafana Labs is considering incremental PRR as part of ongoing product enhancements and is exploring systematic ways to incorporate feedback and update the PRR process effectively. The company invites community feedback and is actively hiring to further develop its PRR initiatives.
