How product teams can manage their performance using Grafana, Prometheus, and Oracle metrics

At ObservabilityCON 2021, Walter Ritzel Paixão Côrtes from Dell introduced Product Team Observability, a data-driven solution leveraging Grafana, Prometheus, and Oracle to enhance product team performance. As Dell shifted from a project-focused to a product-focused approach, the team adopted these tools to monitor various metrics, including backlog, user, application, and DevOps metrics, as well as compliance and customer satisfaction. This approach is built on the observability pillars of metrics, tracing, and logs, and involves an ETL process to consolidate data from different sources. The use of a comprehensive dashboard allows teams to have a holistic view of their performance and progress, leading to significant improvements such as time savings, increased efficiency, and cultural shifts in how metrics are perceived within the organization. By the end of the third quarter, the data-driven mindset had helped four out of five monitored products achieve a 70% product maturity score, highlighting the effectiveness of this observability approach in driving improvements and strategic planning within product teams.
