Grafana Tempo, an open-source distributed tracing project, has reached general availability with its 1.0 release, marking a significant milestone for the team led by Joe Elliott. Initially announced at ObservabilityCON in October 2020, Tempo has demonstrated impressive scalability, now handling over 2 million spans per second and storing 136TB of compressed trace data. The focus over the past eight months has been on enhancing stability and scale, which has attracted power users who manage large trace volumes. With the 1.0 release, Grafana also launched Grafana Cloud Traces, offering integration with metrics, logs, and dashboards, and allowing users to upload up to 50GB of traces monthly at no cost. Future plans include adding features to appeal to medium and small users, such as native search capabilities. The project has been a collaborative effort, with significant contributions from a dedicated team and the broader community, emphasizing the value of open-source development.
