In June 2021, Grafana Labs hosted its first company-wide hackathon, bringing together employees from various departments to tackle technical challenges related to their products and community. Among the diverse projects, The Alchemists team won the Best Integration/Plugin prize with their innovative approach of using Arrow DataFusion to create a unified querying interface for Grafana data sources, allowing real-time querying without data ingestion. Team members Stephanie Closson, Todd Treece, and Travis Patterson collaborated on this complex project, which involved leveraging their skills in query interfaces, creating data source query proxies, and developing backend connectors. Despite encountering challenges with querying column-oriented datastores, the project was a valuable learning experience, highlighting the importance of initial context-setting and teamwork. The hackathon was not only a platform for innovation but also a chance for participants to connect and showcase their enthusiasm and expertise, with Grafana Labs continuing to expand its remote workforce globally.
