Continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) are crucial for modern software delivery, yet visibility into these processes has been limited until now, with OpenTelemetry (OTel) offering a transformative solution. OpenTelemetry, a project under the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, provides a unified protocol for logs, metrics, and traces, enabling enhanced observability of CI/CD pipelines. This shift allows developers to address issues earlier in the pipeline, improving efficiency and reducing costs associated with post-deployment downtime. The introduction of new semantic conventions and a Special Interest Group (SIG) for CI/CD observability further supports this movement. By facilitating ownership of CI data, OpenTelemetry allows for more precise root cause analysis and optimization of CI system performance. As observability continues to evolve in the CI/CD space, it is expected to significantly enhance the robustness and integrity of software delivery processes, aligning them with best practices applied to production systems.
