Grafana Labs has introduced Tempo, a scalable and cost-effective distributed tracing system designed to simplify trace ID lookup with its sole dependency being object storage, like GCS or S3. The system addresses the limitations faced by engineers who need to find specific traces, offering a solution without the need for managing additional infrastructure like Elasticsearch or Cassandra. Tempo efficiently ingests and retains traces for up to 14 days, handling large volumes of data by storing it in GCS. Integrations with Grafana enable linking traces from logs using tools such as Loki, allowing detailed searches based on various log fields, and from metrics through open-source exemplars, enhancing the flexibility and depth of trace analysis. The Grafana Agent further facilitates comprehensive observability by correlating traces, logs, and metrics with consistent metadata, enabling operators to swiftly identify and troubleshoot issues. Tempo is available for open-beta access on Grafana Cloud, with free and paid plans to accommodate various user needs.
