What Is Credential Layer Security? The Layer Every Other Control Trusts
Blog post from GitGuardian
Credential layer security is an enterprise-wide approach to protecting passwords, API keys, tokens, private keys, and other authentication material across every location where they may be created, stored, transmitted, or used, including vaults, code repositories, cloud systems, developer laptops, collaboration platforms, backups, and public sites. The text argues that credentials are especially valuable to attackers because valid secrets can provide trusted, persistent access to systems and can lead to further credentials, particularly when machine identities rely on long-lived, broadly scoped tokens. It describes four types of credential surfaces—governed, working, spilled, and escaped—and emphasizes that a single credential can move among them while retaining access privileges. A connected security program should discover secrets across all environments, prioritize them according to validity and access risk, link them to identities and owners, remediate both the original exposure and its copies, prevent further plaintext spread through developer and AI-agent controls, and use honeytokens to detect harvesting attempts. Developer endpoints and AI agents receive particular attention because they can access files, commands, APIs, and MCP servers, expanding opportunities for secrets to accumulate or be misused. Credential layer security is presented as complementary to IAM, PAM, vaults, endpoint protection, cloud security, and other existing defenses, with GitGuardian positioned as a platform intended to support these capabilities.
