GitHub Octoverse 2026: AI Agents, Citizen Developers, and the New Security Reality
Blog post from GitGuardian
GitHub’s reported 2026 growth in software activity, including 34.3 billion commits, more than 40% of pull requests initiated by AI agents, and 45.4 billion GitHub Actions jobs, is presented as evidence that AI, automation, and citizen development are rapidly expanding the pace and scope of software creation. Drawing on GitGuardian research, the text argues that this acceleration increases credential-exposure risks, citing 28.65 million secrets exposed in public GitHub commits in 2025, a higher reported secret-leak rate in Claude Code-assisted commits, and long-lived valid credentials that can remain active for years. It highlights developer machines, AI tool logs and configurations, build pipelines, and citizen-developed applications as important security boundaries because they may contain API keys and other sensitive credentials. The proposed response is a credential-security approach combining endpoint discovery and remediation, centralized secrets management, shorter-lived permissions, protections embedded in AI-agent workflows, local and repository scanning, and safeguards for software supply-chain credentials.
