AI Agent Security: Best Practices for Safe Deployment
Blog post from GitGuardian
AI agents introduce security risks because they authenticate, use credentials, access files, execute commands, call APIs, and act across systems, making them a form of non-human identity that requires governance comparable to service accounts. The guidance frames agent security around limiting blast radius and managing the agent’s operational environment, particularly in response to threats such as prompt injection, excessive permissions, credential exposure, configuration tampering, and insecure MCP server integrations. Its six recommended controls are sandboxing agents with restricted filesystem and network access; assigning unique, short-lived, least-privilege credentials with clear ownership; preventing agents from modifying their own configurations or tool integrations; logging tool calls, connections, and credential activity while using honeytokens for early detection; scanning workspaces, prompts, configurations, and generated code for secrets; and requiring human approval only for consequential or irreversible actions. It notes that scanning alone cannot protect credentials available through runtime environments, advocating credential brokers, vault injection, and ephemeral tokens where possible. At an organizational level, the approach calls for centrally enforced settings, managed credential distribution, centralized telemetry, MCP inventories, and incident-response procedures, emphasizing that an agent’s security depends less on the model itself than on its permissions, tools, identities, and oversight.
