Joe Engressia, born blind with a keen ear, inadvertently pioneered the phone phreaking movement, a precursor to modern hacking instrumental in the formation of Apple. Engressia discovered that whistling at a specific pitch could manipulate phone systems, leading to the creation of a subculture of enthusiasts who explored telephony's vulnerabilities. Notably, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, inspired by this movement, built and sold "blue boxes" that allowed free long-distance calls by mimicking phone tones. This early experience in innovative technology and distribution played a crucial role in Apple's founding. Despite phone network digitalization ending tone-based systems, the legacy of phreaking endures, influencing the hacking community and fostering a generation's interest in technology and its subversion.
