The Observability Trap: Why Vendor Lock-In Is Still a Problem in 2026 (And How to Avoid It)
Blog post from Dash0
OpenTelemetry has largely reduced instrumentation lock-in by standardizing traces, metrics, logs, SDKs, collectors, and OTLP-based data export, enabling organizations to change observability backends without re-instrumenting services. However, the discussion argues that lock-in has shifted to proprietary dashboards, alert rules, query languages, opaque pricing, cross-signal correlation models, profiling formats, and AI systems whose insights or autonomous workflows cannot leave a vendor’s platform. It recommends portable standards such as Perses for dashboards, PromQL for metrics queries and alerts, pprof for profiling, Git-managed configuration, transparent usage-based pricing, and OTel semantic conventions for consistent cost attribution and interoperable AI. Dash0 is presented as an example platform using OTel, Perses, PromQL, SignalStore, and portable artifacts from its Agent0 and Darkplane products, while offering AI-assisted instrumentation, correlation, automation, and cost controls. The central argument is that OTel is necessary but insufficient for avoiding vendor dependence, and that organizations should assess observability platforms for openness across data ingestion, dashboards, alerts, queries, pricing, AI, security, and compliance so remaining with a vendor is a choice rather than a constraint.
