Initially observed in November 2020, it gained traction particularly in the education sector by appearing on websites offering free educational resources, where users were misled into downloading it. Once installed, it alters users' default browser settings and utilizes a persistent background page to hijack search sessions, redirecting them to ad-laden pages. This not only generates revenue for the developer through ad clicks but also raises privacy concerns by collecting browsing data, cookies, and saved passwords, which can be monetized. CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm, has marked WebNavigatorBrowser as adware and recommends its removal to prevent potential performance issues and security risks, especially since the browser lacks updates to the latest security patches.
