Summary

Apache Kafka 4.4.0 introduces 25 KIPs and 963 commits since version 4.3.0, delivering new capabilities, operational improvements, bug fixes, and several deprecations across brokers, clients, Streams, and Connect. Major broker and client additions include dead-letter queues for share groups, asynchronous DNS bootstrap resolution, controller unregistration, improved cluster API-version tooling, delayed tiered-storage uploads, detection of misrouted client connections, expanded Linux I/O metrics, configurable producer performance-test key distributions, and share-group offset initialization from files. The release also deprecates broker.id, a ClientQuotaCallback method, legacy Yammer-based group coordinator metrics, and the older kafka-broker-api-versions.sh utility. Kafka Streams gains richer GlobalKTable joins, topology-description reporting, broker-side custom task assignors, optional transactional state stores, header-aware interactive queries and partitioning, refined shutdown and cleanup behavior, and earlier validation of application.server. Kafka Connect now allows operators to disable automatic internal-topic creation and provides a tool to create those topics manually, while upgrade documentation details compatibility requirements and migration steps.
