Summary

Confluent Platform’s Self-Balancing Clusters (SBC), introduced in version 6.0, automatically monitors Kafka cluster workloads and topology changes to rebalance partitions and reduce manual operational work. Subsequent releases added CLI and REST APIs for tracking broker-addition and removal tasks, viewing the balancer’s operational state and startup errors, and monitoring AnyUnevenLoad statuses such as balanced, balancing, disabled, or failed. Confluent Platform 7.0 further improves SBC by enabling atomic, idempotent multi-broker removal, moving data before shutting down brokers to avoid under-replicated partitions and make cluster downsizing less disruptive. Control Center also expands its SBC interface to display balancer, rebalance, broker-task, and error statuses, providing operators with more context and potential remediation guidance.
