Loading Parquet data into MySQL with ClickHouse
Blog post from ClickHouse
ClickHouse’s clickhouse-local tool can transfer Parquet data into MySQL and query the imported results without leaving the ClickHouse environment. The walkthrough starts a local MySQL 8.4 instance in Docker, configures ClickHouse with MySQL connection details, and examines a Stack Overflow votes Parquet file hosted in S3 before creating a compatible InnoDB table in MySQL. Using ClickHouse’s url and mysql table functions, it loads roughly 2.3 million vote records into MySQL in about 17 seconds, then demonstrates querying MySQL through ClickHouse. Queries supplied as structured subqueries are parsed and translated from supported ClickHouse syntax into MySQL SQL, whereas queries passed as strings must already use valid MySQL syntax, as illustrated by the incompatibility of ClickHouse’s tuple function. The post also shows how named collections can store reusable connection settings and concludes with an aggregate query identifying Stack Overflow posts that received both upvotes and downvotes, while noting that ClickHouse provides comparable table functions for systems including PostgreSQL, SQLite, and MongoDB.
